Research: Design in Nature
Today we are featuring insect plates from Research: Design in Nature, edited by John Gilbert Wilkins, published by the Field Museum of Natural History and the School of the Art Institute Chicago in 1924. The portfolio features over 200 leaves of plates that were printed in the Field Museum pressroom. The drawings featured in the plates were created by many different artists, including some of Wilkins’ students. The plates are photogravures, and Wilkins notes that “it is possibly the best method of reproducing the soft pleasing effects of the pencil renderings.”
Research: Design in Nature includes a wide variety of plant and animal drawings, highlighting the design elements that can be found in nature. Today we are focusing on insects because they show both the horrifying and beautiful aspects of the natural world.

Illustrations des années 1920 et 1930.
Au cours des années 1920 et 1930, à la croisée des ères Taishō jidai 大正時代 (1912-1926) & Shōwa jidai 昭和時代
Expressionist portraits by Victor Tkachenko
Victor Tkachenko received professional art training beginning at age ten and was one of few graduates to complete the extensive and rigorous program from the well-renowned Art School in Krivoy Rog, Ukraine. Working primarily with acrylic on board Victor displays a mastery of line and color through purposeful brushwork and a palette dominated by rich earth tones thickly applied to the ground. The physicality of his work is enhanced with accents of ink and, intermittently, the addition of industrial materials such as varnish and plaster. Throughout the various stages of his work, Victor’s figurative forms are drafted with elongated lines, exaggerated features and geometric patterns that recall the hand of Amedeo Modigliani and Gustav Klimt accented with a subtle cubist aesthetic.
